Business Credit 101: How to Start Building It From Day One
Share
Most new business owners don't think about business credit until they need funding β and by then, they're starting from zero. Here's how to build it early, so it's there when you need it.
Separate Your Business and Personal Finances Immediately
This is step one, no exceptions. Open a dedicated business bank account under your LLC's name. Mixing personal and business finances doesn't just make taxes harder β it also makes it impossible to build a clean business credit profile.
Get a DUNS Number
A DUNS number is a free, unique identifier from Dun & Bradstreet that most business credit bureaus use to track your business's credit file. Registering is free and takes about 30 minutes.
Start With Net-30 Vendor Accounts
Net-30 vendors let you buy now and pay in 30 days β and many report your payment history to business credit bureaus. Look for vendors in your industry (office supplies, packaging, inventory suppliers) that offer net-30 terms specifically for new businesses.

Get a Business Credit Card (Even a Secured One)
If you can't qualify for a traditional business credit card yet, a secured business card still builds history under your EIN. Use it for small recurring expenses and pay it off in full every month.
Pay Everything Early, Not Just On Time
Business credit scoring (unlike personal credit) often rewards paying before the due date, not just on it. Where personal credit cares about on-time payment, many business credit models score higher the earlier you pay.
Monitor Your Business Credit File
Check your business credit report periodically (Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business, and Equifax Business all offer ways to view your file) so you can catch errors early and see your progress.
Business credit takes months to build, not days β which is exactly why starting on day one matters so much.
